New Zealand's "digital nomad visa" was reported worldwide in early 2025. It is not a visa. It was a change to the conditions attached to existing visitor visas — and a separate tax change followed in 2026.

Understanding which is which matters, because you can be compliant on tax and still in breach of your visa.

The visa change

From 27 January 2025, visitor visa conditions permit remote work for an overseas employer or client. This applies to all visitors, including tourists and people visiting family.

What remains prohibited:

  • Working for a New Zealand employer
  • Providing goods or services to people or businesses in New Zealand
  • Work requiring you to be physically present at a New Zealand workplace

As of 2026, Immigration New Zealand still has no dedicated digital nomad visa. You are a visitor who is permitted to work remotely, not a nomad-visa holder.

The tax change is separate — and different

Two thresholds apply, and they do not match the visa rules.

Rule Threshold
Standard non-resident exemption Not more than 92 days in a 12-month period, where income is taxed elsewhere
New, from 1 April 2026 Remain non-resident for tax up to 275 days in any 18-month period — even exceeding 183 days

The 275-day concession is genuinely significant: it breaks the usual link between crossing 183 days and becoming tax resident. It's aimed squarely at longer-stay remote workers.

The trap

Working remotely for an offshore employer can still breach a standard visitor visa, even where your income is exempt from New Zealand tax.

The tax concession and the visa conditions were designed at different times by different agencies. Qualifying for one does not mean you satisfy the other. Check both, separately:

  1. Do my visa conditions permit the work I'm doing? (Immigration New Zealand)
  2. Does my day count keep me non-resident for tax? (Inland Revenue)

Most guides collapse these into a single "New Zealand welcomes digital nomads" narrative. They are two different regimes with two different day counts and two different regulators.

How long you can stay

Visitor visa duration depends on nationality and visa type. Visa-waiver nationals typically get shorter stays than those granted a visitor visa in advance; extensions are possible but discretionary.

Because there is no nomad-specific category, your maximum stay is whatever your visitor visa permits — the 275-day tax figure is not a stay entitlement.

Where New Zealand sits

Country Formal nomad visa? What exists instead
New Zealand No Visitor visa conditions permitting remote work
Canada No Visitor status, up to 1 year per entry
Australia No No equivalent concession
Spain Yes 3-year residence authorisation
Thailand Yes (DTV) 5-year visa, 180-day stays

If you want documented permission to live and work remotely for a defined multi-year period, New Zealand does not offer it. If you want to spend several months there working for a foreign employer without breaching your visa, that is now explicitly allowed — which it wasn't before 2025.

Frequently asked questions

Does New Zealand have a digital nomad visa? No. It changed visitor visa conditions in January 2025 to permit remote work for overseas employers, but has not created a dedicated visa category.

Can I work remotely on a New Zealand visitor visa? Yes, for an overseas employer or client. You cannot work for a New Zealand employer, serve New Zealand customers, or do work requiring physical presence at a New Zealand workplace.

What is the 92-day rule? If your income is taxed elsewhere, New Zealand generally exempts it provided you spend no more than 92 days in the country in a 12-month period.

What changed on 1 April 2026? A new concession allows eligible visitors to remain non-resident for New Zealand tax purposes for up to 275 days in any 18-month period, even if they exceed 183 days.

Does the tax concession extend how long I can stay? No. It is a tax rule, not an immigration entitlement. Your permitted stay is set by your visitor visa, and remote work can still breach visa conditions even when your income is tax-exempt.
