Georgia was for years the standard answer to "where can I go with no visa and no paperwork". Most pages still say so. The position changed on 1 March 2026 and much of what is published is now wrong.
What changed
Amendments passed in June 2025 introduced mandatory work permits for foreign nationals, taking effect 1 March 2026. The practical result is a split that did not previously exist:

The 365-day visa-free entry is genuinely exceptional and unchanged — citizens of more than 90 countries, including the US, UK, EU member states, Canada and Australia, can still enter and stay a year without applying for anything in advance.
What no longer follows automatically is the right to work while you're there.

Worth recording, because it is still being recommended:

- $2,000/month income or $24,000 in savings
- Health insurance, proof of foreign remote work, clean criminal record
- ~10 days processing
- 12 months, non-renewable
It was among the best-value programmes anywhere. It no longer exists.
How to tell a stale guide

Where this leaves you
For visits and short stays: Georgia remains excellent. A year of visa-free entry with no paperwork is close to unmatched.
For working remotely: you now need to establish what permit applies to your situation. The regime is new and guidance is still settling, so this is a question for Georgian authorities or a local adviser, not for a guide written abroad. Mauritius is the closest replacement — no fee, low threshold, fast approval. Colombia gives longer if your income lands in a bank monthly.
Tax, if you do stay
Georgia's territorial system and small-business regime have long attracted remote workers, and the entry rules changing does not automatically change the tax position. But an arrangement built on being present without a work permit is a weaker footing than it was before March 2026.
