Estonia Digital Nomad Visa 2026: Income Requirement, Process and the e-Residency Confusion

Estonia launched the first purpose-built digital nomad visa in Europe in 2020, and it remains one of the more straightforward to apply for. Two things cause persistent confusion: the income figure, and the relationship with e-Residency.

Requirements at a glance

Schengen note. Estonia is in the Schengen area, so the visa carries Schengen travel rights — but before it is issued, and for time in other member states, the 90/180 rule applies. On the income figure — sources disagree

This is worth being straight about rather than picking a number and presenting it as settled.

Published figures currently in circulation:

• €4,500 gross per month, averaged over the six months before applying — the most commonly cited figure, and stated as gross rather than net
• €3,504 net per month — cited by other sources, documented via six months of bank statements or payslips

These may reflect a threshold that changed, or a gross-versus-net confusion propagating between sites. We have not been able to resolve which is current from secondary sources alone.

Verify directly with the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board before you apply. If you are near either figure, that call is the difference between an application and a wasted €100 plus several weeks.

If you comfortably clear €4,500 gross, the ambiguity doesn't affect you.

e-Residency is not a visa

Estonia's e-Residency programme is widely conflated with the digital nomad visa. They are unrelated.

e-Residency gives you an Estonian digital identity and the ability to run an Estonian company remotely. It confers no right to enter, live or stay. People do apply for both, but one is a business tool and the other is a visa.

Who qualifies

You must be able to work location-independently, and your income must come from outside Estonia — specifically from one of:

• An employer registered outside Estonia
• Your own company registered outside Estonia
• Clients predominantly outside Estonia

The application is made online through the Police and Border Guard Board, then finalised at an Estonian embassy or consulate.

What Estonia is good for

Schengen access. Estonia is in the Schengen Area, so the visa carries the usual Schengen travel rights — meaningful if you want to move around Europe during your stay.

Genuinely digital administration. Estonia's public services are among the most digitised anywhere. Administrative friction after arrival is lower than in most European countries.

Fast processing. 15–30 days is quick by European standards. Spain and Portugal both routinely take longer once their second-stage residence steps are counted.

The limits

One year, no renewal path. The digital nomad visa is capped at 365 days and does not lead to longer-term residency. Extended stays require switching to a different permit category.

High income bar. At €4,500 gross monthly it is the most demanding of the major European nomad visas — above Portugal's €3,680 and well above Italy's €2,333.

How Estonia compares

Estonia asks the most and grants the least duration. It compensates with speed, Schengen access and low administrative friction — a good fit for a defined year in Europe, a poor one if you're building toward settlement.
