Search results are full of pages titled "Canada Digital Nomad Visa." There is no such visa. Canada announced a digital nomad strategy in 2023, but it never became a distinct visa category, and as of 2026 it still hasn't.

That matters, because the route that does exist has different rules, different risks, and no application form.

What actually exists

Remote workers enter Canada as visitors. No work permit is required, provided you are:

  • working for an employer or clients outside Canada,
  • not entering the Canadian labour market, and
  • not providing services to Canadian businesses or individuals.

The logic is that you are not taking Canadian work — you are physically present while doing foreign work. That is a long-standing principle of Canadian immigration policy, not a nomad-specific concession.

How long you can stay

Duration
Standard visitor status Historically 6 months
From January 2026 Most visitor-visa holders may be granted up to 1 year per entry

The Government of Canada's guidance still cites six months as the standard limit in places, while the practical maximum for most visitor-visa holders moved to one year in January 2026. Expect inconsistency in what you read, including on official pages.

The border officer decides. The visa or eTA gets you to the border; the officer determines how long you may stay and stamps or records accordingly. Nothing about visitor status is guaranteed in advance.

What changed in 2026

Canada released clearer guidance for remote professionals in 2026. The substance is mostly about documentation:

  • Officers may ask for proof that your income comes entirely from outside Canada
  • Stronger evidence of foreign employment or overseas income sources is expected
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay

In practice, arrive able to show: an employment contract or client contracts with non-Canadian entities, recent payslips or invoices, bank statements, and evidence of ties elsewhere.

The risk nobody mentions

Because there is no dedicated visa, there is no approval to point to. Every entry is a fresh assessment by a border officer.

Two consequences:

  1. Repeated long stays attract scrutiny. A pattern of back-to-back one-year visits looks like de facto residence, and officers can and do refuse entry on that basis.
  2. A refusal is at the border. With a visa-based route, a refusal happens at a consulate while you are still at home. Here it happens after you've flown.

Carry documentation on every entry, not just the first.

Tax

Spending substantial time in Canada can make you a Canadian tax resident, which is determined by residential ties rather than a simple day count. Visitor status does not shield you from this.

If you intend to use the full one-year allowance, get Canadian tax advice before you go — residency can be triggered by ties like a long-term lease well before any day threshold feels relevant.

Where Canada sits

Country Formal nomad visa? Max stay
Canada No Up to 1 year per entry (visitor)
New Zealand No Visitor visa conditions allow remote work
Spain Yes 3 years
Portugal Yes 2 years, extendable
Thailand Yes (DTV) 180 days per entry, 5-year visa

If you want a visa that confirms in advance that you're allowed to be there working remotely, Canada is not currently that. If you want to spend a season in Canada working for a foreign employer, the visitor route is legitimate and well established.

Frequently asked questions

Does Canada have a digital nomad visa? No. Canada announced a digital nomad strategy in 2023 but never created a distinct visa. Remote workers enter as visitors.

Do I need a work permit to work remotely from Canada? Generally no, provided you work for a foreign employer or foreign clients and do not enter the Canadian labour market.

How long can I stay? Historically six months as a visitor. Since January 2026 most visitor-visa holders may be granted up to one year per entry. The final decision rests with the border officer.

Can I work for Canadian clients? No. Providing goods or services to people or businesses in Canada requires a work permit.

What documents should I carry? Foreign employment or client contracts, recent payslips or invoices, bank statements, proof of funds, and evidence your income originates entirely outside Canada.

Will I owe Canadian tax? Possibly. Canadian tax residency is determined by residential ties rather than a fixed day count, and visitor status does not exempt you. Take advice before an extended stay.
